I recently moved apartments and I have to admit — the process was both stressful and an absolute test in faith. I will be writing a post soon on the moving process, however I wanted to just give you some advice before you decide to move to The City That Never Sleeps.  Gotham City.  The Capital of the World.  The nicknames for New York City are many in number and are just as exciting as the city is itself.  But, are you ready to make the move to the Empire State?

For centuries, people have moved from all over the world just to set down some roots in New York City.  It is one of the biggest cities in the country and is known for its glitz, glamour, and energy.  There’s Broadway.  There’s the art.  There’s the culture.  There’s the nightlife and restaurants.  As you are about to join the ranks of millions before you, here are six things to keep in mind as you prepare your move to New York.

 

 

1.     Get help!  Consider asking friends or relatives to help you to move.  If that isn’t a possibility, it is a good idea to consider hiring a moving company since moving to the city can be a challenge.  Just make sure the company you hire provides interstate moving services and/or has insurance. We tried to move ourselves and it ended up costing more money and took up our entire day!

2.     Find a storage unit.  There are plenty of options for NYC storage, and trust me, you’ll probably need it!  Most apartments are quite small, so if you have a lot of stuff you just can’t get rid of, you’ll need a place to put it. Often times, New Yorkers will keep winter clothes in storage for summer months and vice versa.

3.     Don’t move in the winter.  If you absolutely must move in the winter, there’s not much you can do about it.  But remember, the winters are cold and it can snow and be hard to get around.  Why put a damper on things by letting the weather slow you down.  Save the moving for spring, summer, or fall.

4.     File your change of address.  Do this before you move so that you aren’t missing any mail when you arrive.  Change your address with the USPS, financial institutions, and other subscriptions.  Oh, and let your friends know where you’re going! I actually forgot to do this and now there is a check for $500 floating around somewhere.

5.     Check out the New York State website.  This site can help you get everything done, including, but certainly not limited to finding the right school for your kids, locating doctors and hospitals, and turning on your utilities. I also suggest reading local blogs and magazines to find out about what is going on in this crazy city.

6.    Hit the DMV and Metro station.  You will need to register your car and get a New York driver’s license within 30 days of moving.  Oh, and don’t forget to switch your car insurance. That is, well… if you decide to keep a car. Otherwise you can get a metro card unlimited monthly for only $104!

Where to locate: 

The neighborhood you move to will really depend on your personal preference and budget.  There are some really fabulous areas in New York City, but many of them come with a hefty price tag.  Once of the more popular, and affordable, areas is Brooklyn.  Remember, you don’t have to live right in the heart of Manhattan to still live in NYC!  Here’s what’s great about Brooklyn:

  • Everyone lives in Brooklyn!  Actors, new families, grandparents, college students, and young couples.  The diversity is amazing and the borough is really welcoming!  There’s a great sense of community.
  • It’s cheaper than Manhattan!  Everything in Brooklyn is cheaper than Manhattan.  And we mean everything – restaurants, movies, rent, clothes, and gym memberships to name a few!
  • There’s plenty to do!  You don’t have to leave Brooklyn to have fun.  The borough has some of the best museums, parks, and entertainment options in the city.  There’s a reason so many people are moving to Brooklyn. Smorgasburg in Brooklyn is one of my favorite places. period.
Other great affordable areas:
  • Hells Kitchen ( I just moved into an amazing apartment with a movie theater and pool)!
  • Financial District
  • Upper East Side
